First of all consistency is the key! To get the most benefits out of exercise it is important to be consistent with it and keep at it. If you are expecting to see miracle results in just a few days or weeks, you will be dissapointed. The way to achieve real and long-lasting results is

to be consistent and keep up with your routine.

Setting unrealistic isn´t good, they can actually make you give up when you can´t reach them . Instead it´s best to set achievable goals and take it step by step.  You can set yourself higher goals when you have reached your earlier goals.

It is also good to mix it up. An effective exerc ise routine

is easy to compile from strenght training, interval training and cardio.

One session does not necessarily have to include all of these, but you can do interval training on one day and cardio the next etc.  For the best results you should exercise at least three times a week.
